 Unless exempted in certain circumstances, the IT department has mandated PAN-Aadhaar connection. Furthermore, linking an Aadhaar Card and a PAN Card is required since it allows the government to keep track of taxable financial activities, which can then be identified. It assists in the prevention of tax evasion. Furthermore, linking the Aadhaar card and PAN card prevents an individual from having several PAN cards in order to avoid paying taxes.

EXTENSION DATE:
The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2023.

All persons who desire to link their PAN with Aadhar beyond the deadline will be fined a penalty, according to a notification issued by the CBDT on March 29, 2022. If the PAN-Aadhaar is linked within three months of March 31, a fee of Rs 500/- would be paid, according to the rule. On June 30, 2022, this will come to an end. After that, linking your PAN to your Aadhaar will result in a Rs 1,000/- fine.

How to link PAN with an Aadhar card?  


Go to www.incometax.gov.in, the official website of the Income Tax Department.

New users must first register by clicking the 'Register Here' button.

How to register on the Income Tax Department online portal?  


First visit the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal. Click on the ‘Register Yourself’ option displayed in the right-hand side of the home page.

Now Select User Type as applicable from the given options.

Enter the key details such as PAN, Name, Residential Status and Date of Birth.

Now you need to provide login details such as password for signing into the efiling website, contact and address details. Click on ‘Submit’ option after providing the required details.


A 6 digit One Time Password (OTP) will be sent to your registered mobile number and to your email id. Please verify your mobile number and email id by entering the OTPs in respective columns. In case of a non-resident individual, OTP will only be sent to the email id. Once you have provided the correct OTP, the online registration for ITR filing is completed.
Note: The OTP is valid only for 24 hours. If you fail to enter the OTP within 24 hours of receiving it, the registration process shall expire and therefore, the entire process of registration must be initiated again.

Once registered on Income tax online portal, you can directly login to your account by visiting the e-filing portal.


How to check if PAN is linked with Aadhar?

  • Go to the official website of the Internal Revenue Service
  • Go to the 'Quick Links' tab and click it
  • Select 'Link Aadhaar Status / Link Aadhaar' from the drop-down menu
  • PAN and Aadhaar numbers must be entered
  • Once the application has been completed, click on 'View Link Aadhaar Status.'


Double penalty for failure to link PAN with Aadhaar

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has imposed a fine for missing the March deadline to link the permanent account number (PAN) with Aadhaar. The fine is Rs 500 if PAN and Aadhaar are not linked by June 30 and Rs 1,000 thereafter. June is the last month to link PAN with Aadhaar and save on paying double the penalty.

  • Select 'Link Aadhaar' from the drop-down menu
  • PAN and Aadhaar numbers must be entered
  • Once the application has been completed, click on 'Validate.'
